The spells presented in this article have been invented by wizards serving in military forces. These spells were meant to provide protection from airborne attacks by enemy spellcasters - nothing spoils general's day like a well placed empowered fireball... well, nothing unless the ambusher was hasted and decided to use the fireball spell twice. Or three times, if they took someone else for a ride.

Lesser Detection

Divination
Level: Sor/Wiz 4
Components: V, S, F
Casting Time: 1 action
Range: 100 feet/level
Effect: Two feet radius hemisphere centered on a crystal ball
Duration: 1 hour/level (D)
Saving Throw: None
Spell Resistance: No

This spell must be cast on a crystal ball. Once cast, the ball begins to emit a violet hemisphere of light. Within the hemisphere one can observe all sufficiently powerful (10th caster level of ongoing spell effect or 13th caster level magic items) sources of magic auras as bright points of yellow light found within spell range. The hemisphere can be moved, albeit slowly (no more than 10 feet per round) or the spell effect expires.

Successful Scrying check (DC15, +2 per 100 feet) allows to determine the position of the magic aura with a error margin of 10 feet per 100 feet of distance.

Lesser Detection is blocked by any barrier wider than one inch. The spell is also blocked by any effect foiling Detect Magic spell. If reinforced with Permanency spell, the caster must pay 2000xp to render the spell permanent.

Greater Detection

Divination
Level: Sor/Wiz 6
Components: V, S, F
Casting Time: 1 action
Range: 100 feet/level
Effect: Two feet radius sphere centered on a crystal ball
Duration: 1 hour/level (D)
Saving Throw: None
Spell Resistance: No

As Lesser Detection, but the spell creates a sphere, the spell detects spell effects of 8th caster level and items of 11th caster level. The spell is blocked by one feet wide barriers and an Alarm spell can be placed on the crystal ball to allow for automated detection of new sources of magic.

Enjoy.
